Prince Harry has paid an emotional tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales, describing her as "the best mother in the world".
He was speaking at a memorial service in central London to mark the tenth anniversary of her death.
In a moving address which he wrote himself, Harry called for his mother to be remembered as she would have wanted.
Fighting back the tears, he said: "When she was alive we completely took for granted her love of life.
"Behind the media glare, to two loving children she was simply the best mother in the world.
"She kissed us last thing at night, her beaming smile greeted us home from school.
"She made us and so many other people happy. May this be the way she is remembered."
The service, in the Guards Chapel at Wellington Barracks, was organised by Harry and his older brother Prince William.
Their father, Prince Charles, other members of the Royal Family and Diana's brother, Earl Spencer, and two sisters were among the 500 guests.
Others included Sir Elton John, Sir Cliff Richard, Lord Attenborough and celebrity photographer Mario Testino - all friends of the late Princess.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown and former PMs Tony Blair and Sir John Major were also there.
The Duchess of Cornwall was a notable absentee, after pulling out amid criticism it would be inappropriate for her to attend.
The Archbishop of Canterbury spoke of Diana's charity work, particularly her role in overcoming prejudice and fear of HIV/Aids victims.
Special prayers written for the service described her "vunerability and willingness to reach out to the forgotten".
Many in the congregation cried as they sang Diana's favourite hymn, I Vow To Thee My Country.
The service was relayed through loudspeakers to a crowd of thousands of people gathered outside the chapel.
Earlier a two-minute silence was held at the Harrods in Knightsbridge in honour of Diana and Dodi Fayed, the son of the store's owner, who died with her in a car crash in Paris.
The pair were killed when their Mercedes hit a pillar in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel as they were being chased by paparazzi.
Elsewhere, floral tributes were laid at the gates of Kensington Palace, where Diana was living at the time of her death.
