Three freed over missing Madeleine
The search for missing Madeleine McCann is continuing after the release of three people questioned overnight amid intense police activity.
Briton Robert Murat, a German woman and a Portuguese man were all interviewed by Portugal's Policia Judiciaria until late on Monday night.
As their statements were being taken, forensic experts searched Mr Murat's house less than 150 metres from the McCanns' former apartment.
A source close to the investigation confirmed that he understood the three were released and were "not yet" being treated as suspects.
They were not under arrest but simply questioned as potential witnesses.
In Portugal people who are questioned by police are not considered to be under arrest as they may be in the UK.
A Ministry of Justice spokesman explained that for someone to be arrested they must be actively considered a suspect by police, who must get a court order to arrest them.
Mr Murat's mother, Jenny, who had set up a stall in Praia da Luz for anyone who did not want to talk to police but may have information to share, also told Sky News that her son had been released overnight and was staying with friends.
Mr Murat was reported to the police by a British journalist who was suspicious of his interest in the investigation.
A former property developer, Mr Murat had been working as a translator, assisting the McCanns with the language barrier during the days after Madeleine's disappearance.
The four-year-old girl was snatched from her bed where she was sleeping next to her two-year-old twin siblings, Sean and Amelie, while parents Gerry and Kate had dinner nearby on May 3.
