When horrified motorists came across a huge trail of blood on a motorway in Switzerland, there could be only one logical explanation: a big monster had been shot dead and dragged away.
It was only after police followed the trail of the red stuff for 12 miles that they received the shock of a lifetime - inexplicably the blood had merely been leaking from a butcher's lorry.
After much soul-searching, the theory that Godzilla and King Kong had rumbled on a Swiss motorway, before the victor dragged the loser down the road had to be reluctantly abandoned.
A police statement said officers followed the blood for 12 miles to the town of Kuettigen only to find that a butcher's supply van had spilled its cargo.
A barrel of pork blood had overturned inside. The van had been headed for a local sausage factory.
