Troop leaders make the choice - no matter what the others may think, experiments with the apes showed.
Members of the group would usually go to a dining spot of the leader's choosing even if it meant they got less food than they would have done at other sites.
'It's not just humans that show complex social patterns of despotism and democracy,' said Andrew King, of London Zoo, who carried out the experiments with the apes in the wild.
