Vatican Prints Secrets of Knights Templar

VATICAN CITY (Oct. 12) - The Knights Templar, the medieval Christian military order accused of heresy and sexual misconduct, will soon be partly rehabilitated when the Vatican publishes trial documents it had closely guarded for 700 years

A reproduction of the minutes of trials against the Templars, "'Processus Contra Templarios -- Papal Inquiry into the Trial of the Templars"' is a massive work and much more than a book -- with a $8,333 price tag.

"This is a milestone because it is the first time that these documents are being released by the Vatican, which gives a stamp of authority to the entire project," said Professor Barbara Frale, a medievalist at the Vatican's Secret Archives."Nothing before this offered scholars original documents of the trials of the Templars," she told Reuters in a telephone interview ahead of the official presentation of the work on October 25.The epic comes in a soft leather case that includes a large-format book including scholarly commentary, reproductions of original parchments in Latin, and -- to tantalize Templar buffs -- replicas of the wax seals used by 14th-century Inquisitors.Reuters was given an advance preview of the work, of which only 799 numbered copies have been made. One parchment measuring about half a meter wide by some two meters long is so detailed that it includes reproductions of stains and imperfections seen on the originals.Pope Benedict will be given the first set of the work, published by the Vatican Secret Archives in collaboration with Italy's Scrinium cultural foundation, which acted as curator and will have exclusive world distribution rights.

The Templars, whose full name was "Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon," were founded in 1119 by knights sworn to protecting Christian pilgrims visiting the Holy Land after the Crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1099.They amassed enormous wealth and helped finance wars of some European monarchs. Legends of their hidden treasures, secret rituals and power have figured over the years in films and bestsellers such as "The Da Vinci Code.

"The Knights have also been portrayed as guardians of the legendary Holy Grail, the cup used by Christ at the Last Supper before his crucifixion. The Vatican expects most copies of the work to be bought up by specialized libraries at top universities and by leading medieval scholars.Burned at the StakeThe Templars went into decline after Muslims re-conquered the Holy Land at the end of the 13th century and were accused of heresy by King Philip IV of France, their foremost persecutor. Their alleged offences included denying Christ and secretly worshipping idols. The most titillating part of the documents is the so-called Chinon Parchment, which contains phrases in which Pope Clement V absolves the Templars of charges of heresy, which had been the backbone of King Philip's attempts to eliminate them.Templars were burned at the stake for heresy by King Philip's agents after they made confessions that most historians believe were given under duress. The parchment, also known as the Chinon Chart, was "misplaced" in the Vatican archives until 2001, when Frale stumbled across it.

"The parchment was catalogued incorrectly at some point in history. At first I couldn't believe my eyes. I was incredulous," she said."This was the document that a lot of historians were looking for," the 37-year-old scholar said.Philip was heavily indebted to the Templars, who had helped him finance his wars, and getting rid of them was a convenient way of cancelling his debts, some historians say.Frale said Pope Clement was convinced that while the Templars had committed some grave sins, they were not heretics.Spitting on the CrossTheir initiation ceremony is believed to have included spitting on the cross, but Frale said they justified this as a ritual of obedience in preparation for possible capture by Muslims.

They were also said to have practiced sodomy."Simply put, the pope recognized that they were not heretics but guilty of many other minor crimes -- such as abuses, violence and sinful acts within the order," she said. "But that is not the same as heresy.

"Despite his conviction that the Templars were not guilty of heresy, in 1312 Pope Clement ordered the Templars disbanded for what Frale called "the good of the Church" following his repeated clashes with the French king.Frale depicted the trials against the Templars between 1307 and 1312 as a battle of political wills between Clement and Philip, and said the document means Clement's position has to be reappraised by historians.

"This will allow anyone to see what is actually in documents like these and deflate legends that are in vogue these days," she said.Rosi Fontana, who has helped the Vatican coordinate the project, said: "The most incredible thing is that 700 years have passed and people are still fascinated by all of this.

""The precise reproduction of the parchments will allow scholars to study them, touch them, admire them as if they were dealing with the real thing," Fontana said."But even better, it means the originals will not deteriorate as fast as they would if they were constantly being viewed," she said.

Madeleine Chief Appoints Senior Team

The new man in charge of the hunt for missing Madeleine McCann has signalled his intention to solve the case by bringing in a crack team

Paulo Rebelo - who recently took over the inquiry into Madeleine's disappearance in Portugal - has appointed four senior officers to boost the investigation.

He said each one of the officers is an expert in his field and has been seconded from other areas of the police in the country.

It comes after the senior officer on the Madeleine case, Goncalo Amaral, was reportedly sacked for accusing the McCanns of manipulating the media.

And the second-in-command, Chief Inspector Tavares Almeida, was revealed to have asked for an extended leave of absence.

The new members of the team include a chief inspector and an inspector brought in from the Lisbon headquarters of the Policia Judiciaria (PJ).

Both of them are specialists in homicide and will concentrate on the theory that Madeleine was murdered.

The third new team member will focus on examining data and pursuing new lines of inquiry.

And the fourth officer is an inspector from Portugal's serious crimes police section.

Madeleine, from Rothley, Leicestershire, disappeared in May from her family's apartment in Praia da Luz while her parents, both doctors, dined nearby with friends.

McCanns Welcome New Police Chief

Gerry and Kate McCann have welcomed news that one of Portugal's top cops is taking over the case. They hope Paulo Rebelo will quickly clear them as suspects - and get on with the search for their daughter, their family spokesman Clarence Mitchell says.

It's All Good Nudes For Fertile Strippers

Lap dancers who are at the peak of their fertility earn more in tips than their colleagues, a new study has shown.

It provides more evidence that women send out "secret signals" to men at times when they are ready to conceive.

Previous studies have shown that women dress and behave differently shortly before they menstruate.

Now a new study has shown that dancers who are "on heat" receive more tips than those on the Pill or in the non-fertile periods of their menstrual cycle.

Experts suspect that pheromones - subtle scent signals that in animals play a key role in sexual attractiveness - may be involved.

In other words, fertile women smell more appealing to men.

Researchers at the University Of New Mexico compared the earnings of lap dancers who were menstruating naturally with others taking the contraceptive pill.

During the non-fertile periods of their menstrual cycle, dancers not on the Pill earned much the same as those using the contraceptive.

But when the naturally cycling dancers entered their fertile period, their tips became significantly more generous.

The evidence was the first to show that oestrus has a "real effect on women's earnings", Dr Geoffrey Miller told New Scientist magazine.

However, even on non-fertile days, lap dancers with natural menstrual cycles earned quite well, demonstrating that fertility was not all that the men in their audience were interested in.
"Previous research has shown that women's faces, scent and clothing become more attractive in oestrus," said Dr Miller.

Dr Randy Thornhill, another University Of New Mexico scientist, last month made the controversial claim that women can be "in heat" just like animals.
He said: "We don't know the mechanism of attraction. Are the men detecting the scent of oestrus? Or does the women's behaviour change?"

Gerry: 'I'm Madeleine's Real Father'

Madeleine McCann's father has insisted the four-year-old is his biological daughter after speculation over the missing girl's paternity.

Consultant cardiologist Gerry McCann issued a statement following a report in the Portuguese media.
An article raised doubts about whether he is the Leicestershire youngster's real father.
The McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell said speculation in the Portuguese press was "unwarranted, unsubstantiated and totally inaccurate".
Mr Mitchell said: "For the record, Gerry is the biological father of his daughter Madeleine.
"A newspaper report in the 24 Horas newspaper suggesting otherwise is nothing short of lies. It is indeed an absolute fabrication."

The couple's lawyers in Britain and Portugal reminded editors in both countries that they are monitoring coverage very closely.
Mr Mitchell said the McCann legal team "would not hesitate from taking action at the appropriate stage in either country when and wherever it's felt necessary".
Madeleine disappeared from her family's holiday apartment in a Portuguese resort on May 3.
Her parents launched a worldwide campaign to try and track her down but have since come under fire in the press in recent months.
Both Gerry and Madeleine's mother Kate were made suspects by police investigating the child's disappearance.

Appeal To Holidaymakers Over Madeleine

Tourists who stayed at the resort from where Madeleine McCann disappeared have reportedly been asked to provide DNA samples and fingerprints.

British police are said to have made the appeal after Portuguese detectives failed to identify a number of samples found at the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz.
Superintendent Stuart Prior, who is co-ordinating the investigation in Britain, has written to holidaymakers requesting help, a newspaper claimed.
But a spokeswoman for Leicestershire Constabulary would not confirm whether Supt Prior had issued such an appeal.
She also would not say if there had been any attempt to interview former guests.

A report in The Times said the letter explained that Portuguese detectives had drawn a blank on a number of samples recovered from the resort, including some taken from the McCanns' apartment.
Supt Prior is said to have told tourists in the letter: "I have now been asked by the Portuguese investigation team to arrange for DNA samples and fingerprints to be taken from holidaymakers living in the UK who were staying at the Ocean Club Resort."
He goes on to emphasise that the request is "routine practice", the newspaper reported.
The development comes a month after Kate and Gerry McCann were named as suspects over the disappearance of their daughter.

Gerry and Kate McCann are launching a new campaign to find their daughter. They will focus on the remotest mountain villages in Morocco, Portugal and Spain to reach those who have never heard of the missing girl. Their spokesman speaks to Sky News Online.

Artist of the month

Katie Melua
Katie Melua is a bonfide pop phenomenom and with the release of new album Pictures, that success is set to continue and we have a full-blown Katie fest for you to enjoy with a live session, more tracks from Pictures and an excluisve interview!

Of all the Sessions that AOL Music has recorded, and there have been very man, working with Katie Melua was the easiest. Relaxed, easy going and very professional, she nailed everything in one take and breezed through the whole thing.
It sounded great and it was clear that here was a women very much in control and doing exactly what she wants to be doing, and all with love and attention to detail.
Her career to date has reflected that. From Call Off The Search, Katie's music is simple, beautiful and resonates with millions as sales of that album and the follow-up Piece By Piece have shown. The songs are infectious, even delicate and yet they stand up to be heard time and again.

However, rather than success being a burden or pressuresome, it's the challenge of reflecting the changes in her live and the need to keep moving forward that drives her.
"The one thing that I've learnt from making three albums is that you don't know what is going to happen when you start recording. The fact that I am a bit older, have different interests, have more experiences, and that I have grown and developed as an artist means that this album would be different in some way from the first two.
"I would not want to just try and emulate the success of the previous albums but I also don't feel the need to change for change's sake or to please anyone other than myself," she says.
From Pictures, we have three tracks this week (three more next week) for you to enjoy. What I Miss About You, Spellbound and What It Says On The Tin.
Katie sums it up thus: "I'm really proud of Pictures. It definitely feels like the third part of the trilogy that Mike and I have collaborated on as a creative team. It stays true to what we have always tried to focus on - the lyrics and melody, with emotional songs that hark back to the roots of songwriting."

Expert probes T-rex footprint find

A dinosaur hunter has discovered what he hopes is the world's first Tyrannosaurus rex footprint.

Dr Phil Manning, from the University of Manchester, found a metre-square print in Montana, USA.

T-rex was one of the last dinosaurs to exist before the entire species was wiped out in a mass extinction.

It was a flesh-eating giant, standing 20ft tall, 40ft long and weighing in at about seven tons.

Only about 50 partial skeletons have been recovered since fossil hunters started looking for what was one of the largest carnivores to live on earth. All of the remains have been found in the Hell Creek area of America.

Dr Manning found the footprint last year and has returned to make a detailed study.

"People have been trying to find T-rex tracks for a hundred years," said Dr Manning. "Unless you come across an animal dead in its tracks you can't say for definite what left them. However with information available about the numbers of T-rex in the rocks of the Hell Creek formation it is the closest we have got so far to discovering a tyrannosaur track.

"And it could only be made by one of the two species known from Hell Creek - either the Nanotyrannus or its bigger relative Tyrannosaurus rex. The size of the footprint at 76cm in length suggests it more likely to be the latter."

Dr Manning's drawings and photographs will now provide the basis for a scientific paper which he is looking to publish shortly.

Police Seek Seven-Foot Toilet On Wheels

Police in Seattle are searching for a giant toilet on wheels after the van it was being carried in was stolen.

The 7ft high loo was a novelty racing car that was built by friends to take part in the annual Red Bull Soapbox Race.

It is thought thieves unwittingly pinched the toilet when they made off with the van hired by the racers to take their contraption to the event.

Neither the van nor the toilet-shaped racer have been found since they were stolen at the end of September.

"We're laughing about it," said soapbox driver Tom Valentine, who said he wished he could have seen the thieves' faces when they opened the back of the van.

"My guess is (they said), 'Oh, c**p, it's a giant toilet'."

The soapbox car did not win any races, but was second in the people's choice competition.

'There Is No Magic Machine'

A leading child protection expert has said he has significant concerns about the man nicknamed "The Locator" who has been called in to help find Madeleine McCann.

Former detective Mark Williams-Thomas told Sky News Online he doubts the ability of Daniel Kruger to provide any assistance in tracking down the missing child.
Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have given the South African some hair found on her clothing to use in his "missing person machine".
Mr Kruger refuses to reveal how his mysterious methods work, but they have apparently won him success and recognition in his homeland - which prompted the McCanns to call him in.
He said he has scoured Praia da Luz, in Portugal, and the surrounding area using the equipment, which he developed himself.
Not much is known about his "matter orientation system machine", but it is said to use satellite technology, and he has claimed he is currently in negotiations with companies to develop it.
The former policeman said he believed Madeleine was not transported beyond the area where she went missing on May 3, but her chances of being alive were "very slim".

It was reported he had uncovered a "forensic route" from Madeleine's holiday apartment, along paths and roads to a nearby beach where the trail went cold.
However, the university health and safety director was reluctant to talk in detail about his search, which was carried out over four nights in July.
And Mr Williams-Thomas told Sky News Online "The Locator's" claims belonged "in the realms of fantasy".
"Krugel has no published academic or scientific information about his machine, neither is there anything on the internet about it and no police force outside of his own country uses it," he said.
"If it really does locate missing people then not only would every police force purchase one, but he would be an acclaimed expert and millionaire.
"I am sure his intentions are honourable - however, there is no easy way to find Madeleine, no magic machine."
Madeleine, from Rothley, in Leicestershire, went missing from her family's holiday apartment while her parents dined nearby. She was three when she disappeared.

McCanns Hope Search Will Restart

McCann family spokesman Clarence Mitchell tells Sky News they hope the sacking of the policeman in charge of the search for missing Madeleine will help re-energise the search for the four-year-old.

Wife Let Off Over Fatal Sherry Enema

A Texas woman has escaped being charged with negligent homicide after she killed her husband with a sherry enema.

Tammy Jean Warner had been scheduled to go on trial over the death of Michael Warner, 58.
But Brazoria County District Attorney Jeri Yenne said the charges had been dismissed due to a lack of evidence.

She said the dead man had had a "severe alcohol issue" and it was not clear his wife had committed a crime.

"Let's say I have lung cancer and I continue to smoke. If you provide cigarettes to me, is that negligent homicide?" Ms Yenne asked.

"I really wrestled with the consent issue and negligence issue. I didn't think it rose to the level of negligent homicide."
Michael Warner, a machine shop operator, died at the couple's Lake Jackson home on May 21, 2004.

According to a post mortem report, Mr Warner had been given an enema containing enough sherry to produce a blood alcohol level six times the legal driving limit.

At the time his wife was indicted, Lake Jackson police detective Robert Turner said Michael Warner was a longtime alcoholic who sometimes used enemas to get drunk because a medical condition made it painful for him to drink.

Warner claimed her husband had been addicted to enemas since he was a child. She said he often used alcohol in that manner to get drunk.

'First Night Without Madeleine Hurt Most'

Kate McCann has revealed how the torment she suffered at being named a suspect in her daughter's disappearance was nothing compared with the agony she felt at discovering Madeleine was gone.

Speaking for the first time since her return to the UK, Mrs McCann told of the pain of not knowing what happened to her missing daughter.

She said she cried every day for Madeleine - and the kindness shown to her by strangers also brought her to tears.

"I've had days when, if I wasn't crying about Madeleine, I was crying from the letters and messages people have sent to us. It has helped so much," she said.

Mrs McCann admitted she came "crashing down" when police named her as a suspect in the case.

But she said nothing could eclipse the horror of the night Madeleine went missing from the family's holiday apartment in Portugal on May 3.

"A lot has happened since then. Sometimes, the most trivial of things can bring you crashing down," she said, speaking alongside her husband Gerry.

"Everything that has happened, everything we do and feel, it is all put into perspective by how we felt on that first night.

"I think when we were made suspects in our own daughter's disappearance, when the inference was that Madeleine was dead and that, somehow, we were involved ...

"But, no, it can't get worse than that first night."

Mrs McCann also revealed how she and her husband Gerry are trying to give their twins, Amelie and Sean, as normal a life as possible.

She told the Leicester Mercury: "Something carries you through. We have Sean and Amelie of course. We are there for them.

"We tell them that she is missing and that everyone is looking for her. And that's the truth."

The couple have thanked the people of Rothley and Leicestershire as a whole for their continued support.

Mr McCann said so many well-wishers had written to them that, until recently, they had to collect their mail from the post office in their car.

There would be three crates of letters and cards awaiting collection every day, he said.

Mr McCann added: "We want to increase awareness, get back to basics if you like. Target specific areas with pictures and billboards and messages. We want to refocus the coverage
."

Barragem no Catavejo

Woman Gives Birth To Own Grandchildren

A 51-year-old Brazilian woman has given birth to her own grandchildren - a healthy set of twin boys.

Rosinete Serrao served as a surrogate mother for her daughter Claudia Michelle, who is unable to have children of her own.

The twins, Antonio Bento and Vitor Gabriel, were born healthy and required no special medical care.

The babies have already left the hospital in the northeastern city of Recife.

Hours before going into labour, Mrs Serrao could not hide her anxiety.

Sitting next to her puzzled husband, she prayed to the saints for a smooth birth.

"Saint Cosme and Damiao are protectors of the twins and everything will go well," she said.

Her husband said he was excited about being a father and grandfather at the same time.

Dozens of reporters and photographers had been camped outside the hospital, waiting for the babies to arrive.

Four embryos, fertilised by her 27-year-old daughter Claudia Michelle and her husband Antonio de Brito, were implanted in Mrs Serrao's uterus in January.

Brazil's law only allows close relatives to serve as surrogate mothers, but her daughter had no female siblings.

Despite the risk, Mrs Serrao did not hesitate in accepting her daughter's request.

Doctor Claudio Ribeiro, who assisted in the operation, said it was the world's first known case of a woman giving birth to twin grandchildren.

He said: "There has never been a case like this in the world, of twins developing inside a grandmother's uterus.

"So the family, who watched the birth from a screen inside the waiting room, celebrated the procedure's success."

Second Madeleine Cop Off The Case

The second-in-command in the Madeleine McCann inquiry team has asked for an extended leave of absence, Sky News has learned.

The move comes just days after the police officer leading the investigation was sacked.

Sky News has been told that Chief Inspector Tavares Almeida has asked for the leave.

Portuguese police would not say why the request had been made or when he would return to work.

But the request was made before
Gonçalo Amaral was dismissed, it is understood.

Mr Amaral was reportedly sacked as the regional Policia Judiciaria (PJ) in Portimao after accusing her parents of manipulating the British police.

A successor will be named on Monday to take over the enquiry team, said the police chief in Lisbon, Alipio Ribeiro.

Mr Amaral got his marching orders after accusing
Kate and Gerry McCann of calling the shots by identifying the lines of inquiry Leicestershire Police should take.

He said British officers had overlooked the fact that the couple remain suspects.

And he accused the McCanns of releasing new information each day in an attempt to distract and confuse the inquiry.

Sky's Ian Woods said there was resentment among Portuguese police that they were being made out to be incompetent and "bumbling".

He added that Mr Amaral was also under investigation following allegations he had put pressure on a suspect in a previous murder inquiry.

Diana And Dodi's Last Tender Moments

New pictures of Princess Diana and lover Dodi Fayed arm-in-arm at a Paris hotel before their deaths have been shown to jurors.

An inquest has seen them on CCTV, joking in a lift and then waiting at the rear service exit of the Ritz for seven minutes.

As they prepare to leave the building, she is seen snuggling in Dodi's arms, her head tilted to the left, leaning into him.

Diana bends her arm behind her back to clasp Dodi's hand. Later, he gently rubs her back.

They left at the back of the hotel and tried to fool the hordes of paparazzi at the main entrance.

Staff had used a two-car convoy, a Mercedes and a Range Rover, at the front as a decoy.

In the event, a handful of photographers realised what was happening and snapped the couple leaving for the last time.

It has also emerged that Henri Paul signalled to the paparazzi to let them know the couple were just about to leave the Ritz.

Paul was the head of security there and drove the couple that night. He waved at photographers just moments before the couple departed the hotel.

He was taking them in a Mercedes to Mr Fayed's Paris flat where, his family believe, he was to present Diana with an engagement ring.

But they did not get there and the car crashed in a tunnel after midnight on August 31, 1997
Earlier, the jury at the inquest into the couple's deaths heard how Mr Paul ordered drinks in a hotel bar in the hours before the crash.

New CCTV pictures submitted to London's High Court showed Mr Paul heading for the bar in the Ritz.

Both French and British police said Mr Paul had been drinking heavily.

The jury has heard already that blood tests showed he was over the drink-drive limit when he crashed into a pillar in an underpass in the city.

But Dodi's father, Mohamed al Fayed, insists the Frenchman was not drunk and the samples had been switched. The inquest has been adjourned until Monday.

Couple Prepare To Leave Ritz

New CCTV footage of the last hours of Diana, Princess of Wales and Dodi Fayed have been shown to inquest jurors and released for public viewing. Commentary is from Sky's royal correspondent Sarah Hughes and royal author Martyn Gregory.
