Smokers warned of littering fines

- Search: Smokers littering fines

Smokers are being warned that they face on-the-spot fines for littering if they drop butts in the street.

Smokers trying not to be fined for breaking England's ban on smoking in enclosed public places from July 1 could be hit by a different fine.

Alan Woods, Chief Executive of Keep Britain Tidy (KBT), said: "Smokers will think they are avoiding a fine by lighting-up outside."

He added: "If they don't dispose of their cigarette stub responsibly, by putting it in a bin or portable ashtray, they are risking being issued with a fine of up to £80 for littering instead."

Nearly 80% of streets are blighted by cigarette stubs - 20% more than five years ago, according to KBT.

The annual clean up bill stands at £200 million just for cigarette ends.
An estimated 122 tonnes of cigarette ends, matchsticks and other bits of smoking litter are dropped every day.

KBT are now urging smokers to bin their butts.

Tesco are selling portable ashtrays from June 4.

The "Ashcan", which mimics the size and shape of a cigarette, fits into a cigarette packet where it can be used to extinguish stubs.

Video released of BBC's Johnston

A video has appeared on the internet showing the first pictures of BBC correspondent Alan Johnston since his abduction in Gaza on 12 March.

It is said to have been posted by the Army of Islam, the group that says it is holding the reporter.

In the video, Mr Johnston says he is in good health and that his captors have treated him well.
The BBC said it was studying the video carefully and repeated its call for the immediate release of Mr Johnston.

A UK Foreign Office spokesman said it was also investigating the contents of the video "to judge the implications for Alan Johnston's safe release".

Mr Johnston, 45, was seized nearly 12 weeks ago in Gaza City on his way home.

Abu Qatada

It is unclear when the video, which has appeared on the al-Ekhlaas website, was recorded.

Mr Johnston says: "First of all, my captors have treated me very well... They have fed me well, there has been no violence towards me at all and I'm in good health."

Mr Johnston, seated and wearing a red sweatshirt, calls for an end to Western sanctions that have been imposed on the Palestinian government.

He talks of the "huge suffering" of the Palestinian people, saying: "Everyday there are Palestinians arrested, imprisoned for no reason. People are killed on a daily basis. The economic suffering is terrible, especially here in Gaza."
He also says the British government is working to occupy Muslim lands against the will of the people there.

Mr Johnston refers to the "failed invasion of Iraq by America and Britain" and the "terrible" situation in Afghanistan.

At the end of the video, Mr Johnston begins a message to his family, saying, "to my family, to my family..." but the audio is then cut off.

On the tape, the Army of Islam demand the release of Abu Qatada, a Palestinian-born Islamic cleric who is suspected of close links to al-Qaeda and is currently held by the UK government as a threat to national security.

In early May, the same group released a videotape showing Mr Johnston's BBC identity card and making the same demand for the release of Abu Qatada, but there has been virtually no other news about the reporter.

The BBC issued a statement on Friday saying the corporation had been "working very closely with Alan's family for the past 81 days".

It read: "This is a highly distressing time for them and for his friends and his colleagues. We repeat our call for his immediate release."

Senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat again called for the unconditional and immediate release of Mr Johnston and said that all Palestinians stood behind him.

"There is not a house in Gaza that does not have a picture of Alan Johnston," he said.

Mr Johnston was the only Western reporter permanently based in Gaza and his abduction has triggered appeals for his release from lawmakers and rights groups around the world.

More than 130,000 people have now signed an online petition calling for his release.

Johnston video posted on website

Reports say video of Alan Johnston
posted on website

The missing BBC journalist Alan Johnston who was captured in Gaza more than two months has been shown in a video, saying he was "fit and well" and not being mistreated by his captors.

The video was apparently posted on the internet by the Army of Islam group and contains the first images of the reporter since his kidnap on March 12.

Mr Johnston first reassures everyone that he is in good health and then goes on to deliver a stinging attack on British foreign policy in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The BBC correspondent appeared calm throughout the video, in which he was shown sitting down wearing an orange sweatshirt and speaking directly to camera. He started by saying: "My captors have treated me very well, they have fed me well, there has been no violence toward me at all and I am in good health."
Johnston then moved on to talking about the "huge suffering" he had seen in the Palestinian territories in the past three years and said it was "continuing and unacceptable".

Palestinian people were in "absolute despair" after nearly 40 years of Israeli occupation which has been "supported by the West", he added just before the tape corrupts. It picks up again with him claiming the situation on Iraq was "even worse".

He said: "We see every day maybe a hundred or more being killed by the violence there, which followed the failed invasion of Iraq by America and Britain. Ordinary people who are losing everything cannot live their lives properly, not just because of the violence but the shortage of everything they need for their normal lives and for bringing up their children.

"Afghanistan, again, is terrible. We see on our television screens ordinary and village people suffering as the armies of America and Britain attack."

The British Government was "endlessly working to occupy Muslim lands against the will of the people in those places", he went on.

He added: "From history, the British worked to bring about the state of Israel which is the cause of all the suffering of the Palestinian people. We the British are completely to blame along with the Americans for the situation in Iraq, and the British are the main force in Afghanistan causing all the trouble to all the simple Afghans who simply want to live."

How to eat healthily at work

- Tasty recipes
- Understand your food cravings
- Detox with delicious food

If you spend as much time at the vending machine as you do at your desk, it might be time to get healthy.

It's not just your teeth that will love you for it - eating healthily during the working week can have a positive effect on your overall health, your performance at work and even your bank balance.

Breakfast
Eating breakfast gets your digestive system going, and fuels you up until lunchtime. Try eating foods that release energy slowly e.g. porridge, brown bread or muesli. These foods provide you with a steady release of glucose and will fill you up more effectively than sugary cereals and croissants, making you less likely to reach out for a mid-morning snack. Porridge is also great for regulating bowel movement and is a good source of vitamin B, which can help relieve nerves and reduce stress. With a 1kg bag lasting you a month at around £1.50, it's cheap as well as nutritious.

Snacks
If you love your crisps and chocolate, try snacking on dark chocolate to get your fix without the sugar rush and avoid crisps cooked in hydrogenated oil. Try fruit, nuts, seeds and vegetables, which boost concentration levels. The water content in vegetables is also a great way to naturally hydrate your skin, giving it a younger, healthier appearance, so try slicing up sticks of carrots, peppers and celery and dunking them in some dips such as humous or tzatziki.

Lunch
Preparing your own lunch is usually cheaper than buying lunch at work, with the added benefit that you know exactly what's in your food. If you don't have time to prepare food at home, then try buying something that includes a good source of protein and a slow releasing carbohydrate - that way you'll be eating food that satisfies your appetite but is less likely to lead to a mid-afternoon slump.

Fruit power

Bananas

This fruit can help depression, and also has beneficial effects on digestion and ulcers.

"Perhaps the ultimate fast food, bananas are understandably one of the most popular energy boosters," Savona says. "They also contain tryptophan which the body can convert to serotonin - a hormone that helps lift moods and promote sleep.

"The pectin fibre helps soothe heartburn, ulcers or inflammation in the digestive tract, and to lower cholesterol.
Fact: A study carried out by mental health charity MIND found that eating just one banana made people with mild depression feel better.
Eat: Take one fresh, preferably not too ripe, banana a day to help stave off the blues and aid concentration.

Blueberries

May be beneficial for the eyes, brain and strengthening the veins and arteries, helping circulation. They may also help lower cholesterol and protect against cancer.

"Studies have shown that blueberries can help to improve brain function and the eyes, helping night vision and protecting against age-related macular degeneration, cataracts and glaucoma," Savona says.

Fact: A wild blueberry from Patagonia contains up to 11 times the antioxidant activity of blueberries, research has found, and has been proven to have beneficial effects on those at a greater risk of DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) and varicose veins.
Eat: Enjoy fresh blueberries daily. Travellers concerned about DVT could take Zinopin Daily, containing the Patagonia blueberry.

Kiwifruit

These could help blood pressure and digestion and may reduce asthma symptoms in children.

Savona says, "Scientists have found that eating two or three kiwifruit a day helps reduce blood clotting and therefore stroke potential, as well as blood fats. They're also good for balancing out your salt intake to keep your blood pressure right.

"Kiwifruit contain twice as much Vitamin C as oranges, more fibre than apples and as much Vitamin E as an avocado.

Fact: Children eating the most citrus and kiwi fruit (five to seven servings per week) had 44% less incidence of asthma wheezing compared to children eating the least (less than once a week), a recent study found.

Eat: Have your recommended five to seven servings a week. Some people, particularly children, can have an allergic reaction to kiwifruit, especially the skin.

Pineapple

This fruit could be beneficial for arthritis and joint pain.

"Pineapple can help relieve the swelling linked to arthritis and sore throats, as well as injuries or operations.

"It's rich in an enzyme called bromelain, which appears to thin mucus so it's useful for helping bronchitis, asthma and sinus problems. It can also help reduce the stickiness of blood, and has been shown to relieve angina and thrombosis," Savona says.

Fact: In clinical trials, bromelain has demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory effects, reducing swelling in conditions such as arthritis and gout, and speeding recovery from injuries and surgery.

Eat: It will aid digestion when eaten with a meal, but for reducing inflammation, eat fresh pineapple between meals.

Tomatoes

Hailed as a natural weapon in the fight against cancer, tomatoes are particularly beneficial to men, protecting against prostate cancer and boosting sperm production.

"These are one of the most commonly eaten wonderfoods," Savona says. "Tomatoes contain a nutrient called lycopene which protects against cancer and guards the skin and eyes from sun damage." The rich Vitamin C and potassium content of tomatoes also helps combat cardiovascular disease. Antioxidants in tomatoes may trigger joint pain in arthritis sufferers.

Fact: Researchers at the Rowett Institute, Aberdeen, found that tomatoes contain a unique chemical which thins the blood and helps prevent blood clots and DVT.

Eat: Lycopene in tomatoes is absorbed more efficiently by the body if processed into juice, sauce, paste and ketchup. The Sirco range of fruit drinks now contain Fruitflow, the patented

Tears as Madeleine parents see Pope

- Search: McCanns Pope Rome
The parents of missing Madeleine McCann shed tears during an emotional trip to the Vatican to meet the Pope.
Gerry and Kate McCann were given the honour of meeting the Pontiff during a General Audience at the Vatican.

The couple are very devout Catholics - particularly Mrs McCann - and they believe the visit will be spiritually uplifting.

The meeting with Pope Benedict XVI lasted a little less than 30 seconds, during which time Mrs McCann gave a photograph of her daughter to him.

She spoke emphatically to the Holy Father while her husband bowed and kissed his hand.

The couple had struggled to control their emotions throughout the ceremony, which lasted more than an hour-and-a-half.

At one point, an English-speaking priest issued a prayer on behalf of the Pope: "In a special way his blessing goes to your children and your loved ones."

His words proved too much for the couple, who broke down and wiped back the tears with their heads bowed.

For much of the general audience, Mrs McCann, the now standard green and yellow ribbons in her hair fluttering in the breeze, kept her eyes closed.

Madeleine was snatched from her bed in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz 27 days ago.
